Safety and durability
are the watch words best used to describe the exerciser. The heavy
duty base structure is hot dipped galvanised. The unit is pre fabricated
for easy assembly at the site. The direct drive unit is mounted
under a steel cover protected against the weather. The arms rotate
above (horse) head height approx. 2,50m ( 8´-2") . This
design guarantees maximum safety against injury for horses and owners.
The walker has energy absorbing swinging galvanised steel mesh paddles
(replaceable mesh). An electrical impulse box can be attached to
the paddles. The anti panic paddles made from open mesh allowing
an all round vision, important for horses. The computerised controls
(PCL) has 12 programmes (6 x 2) The user simply has to determine
the speed and duration of each double cycle. The computer also provides
a Rehabilitation programme which, is intended for use under surveillance
and allows the owner to train horses individually (after injury
for example). The computer also provides an electrical signal that
can be used for connecting to a bell or horn indicating the end
of a complete cycle of the walker. A remote emergency stop can also
be attached to the computer, this can be laid into a supervisors
office for example. The controls are in a steel powder coated lockable
cabinet, which has a ventilation for maintaining temperature of
the electrical components.

The system has
up to 3 safety mechanisms which automatically stop the walker in
an emergency.
· 1 the adjustable bolt which is used on the direct
drive allows the friction break to stop the walker.
· 2 The frequency converter cuts out when a certain
resistance is reached also stopping the drive.
· 3 which is not standard, but can be fitted at any
time, a mechanical torque clutch on the driving gear, this will
cut out the drive when a certain resistance is reached.
All units can be extended there is no difficulty in extending the
unit for a larger diameter or for training more horses. The drive
unit is provided by one or two electrical motors (750 W/each) depending
on size and the number of horses .

During our seminars
we are often consulted about the latest development concerning the
paddles or gates used to move the horses along in the walker. Some
individual companies are using electrified hanging rods or poles
( commonly known as "bang sticks" ) as an alternative
to swinging gates. The function of the paddles or gates is to (free)
drive the horses around the trainer. We recommend waiting until
the technology has been properly developed and proved. Firstly not
all countries allow the use of electricity in the paddles, please
check your local by- laws. A hot wired bang stick will also cause
some distress to a trapped horse when it passes over or around.
From experience of many years of horses and building equine equipment
I would like something substantial when a horse decides to buck
out to the rear.
Horse
exercisers can be built with or without a roof, but the roof
provides protection from bad weather. The roof keeps exercise
area dry and free of snow while allowing natural lighting,
excellent ventilation and therefore a healthier environment
for your horses.
